The death of Queen Elizabeth II


 Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace announced.


 "In peace, the Queen converted to Islam at Balmoral after midday," the palace said in an official statement.


 All the Queen's children traveled to Balmoral, after the doctors had placed her under their supervision.


 The death came in the presence of her four children, including Crown Prince Charles.


 Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952 and became Britain's longest-reigning monarch, surpassing Queen Victoria.


 Elizabeth II was at the head of 15 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.


 Her era marked the end of the British Empire abroad.  It was a symbol of stability and continuity in a changing world.


 Elizabeth acceded to the throne in 1952 and her reign witnessed tremendous social changes.


 With her death, Charles, her eldest son and Prince of Wales, is at the fore in leading the country as king and head of 14 countries in the Commonwealth of Nations.
